Mindstorm Electric Eagles – FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics Club
For all interested students in Grades 5 to 8
What is FIRST LEGO League?
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an exciting alliance between FIRST and the LEGO® Group. It’s a robotics program for 9 to 14 year olds, which is designed to get children excited about science and technology -- and teach them valuable employment and life skills.
Teams of up to 10 kids program an autonomous robot (using a LEGO MINDSTORMS® robot set) to score points on a thematic playing surface, create an innovative solution to a problem or question as part of their Project, all while guided by the FLL Core Values. These three elements - the Robot Game, Project, and FLL Core Values - make up the yearly Challenge. Teams attend a tournament to showcase their work from the season. See more at: www.firstlegoleague.org.

Mindstorms Programming and Robotics
There are numerous free online tutorials found on the “Robot Game, Programming section” of www.firstlegoleague.org/challenge/teamresources that give background on EV3 and NXT Programming. The goal of the Robotics Club is that the students who know about programming will tutor the other team members and all learn together!
2017 FLL Season at Saint John School
Thanks to a grant from Pfizer, St. John School has registered one team for this sixth year of Robotics Club. The season begins in late August with the release of the Challenge, the Qualifying Tournament is scheduled for mid-November and the State Tournament is in early December. Everyone needs to participate in all three parts of FLL (the project, core values/teamwork, and robot/programming) for their team.
Students should plan on about 4-5 hours per week of commitment for meetings (Friday after school) and work outside of the meetings (research, etc.) from September through December. You won’t need to be at every meeting, but your schedule should be open on Fridays to make almost all of them. Similar to the SJS athletic programs, we hope that our students learn to appreciate and develop their God given talents as they grow with their teammates in virtue, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
