Gym class can be scary for some young children. I make it fun for children in Pre-K to 2nd grade by introducing games and challenging activities. The main focus is trying to improve coordination, balance and overall general fitness. In addition, I stress good sporstmanship, tolerance and treating others the way you wish to be treated. I also stress the importance of participating and that everyone is a winner!
For 3rd-5th graders, I work on improving their self-esteem and overall fitness. Overall fitness will be different for each child and I stress to them not to compare themselves to anyone in the class. I spend more time doing activities that require more movement and running. By doing so I hope to improve their muscle tone and the overall cardio fitness.
With grades 6, 7 and 8, I am constantly discussing the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. I continue to stress good spotsmanship, tolerance and the importance of achieving personal goals in gym class, school and life. Most classes involve activities that can be done outside school and they can enjoy as they get older. My job is to prepare them with a good foundation for P.E. classes in high school.
Grades are based on participation in class, following directions and cooperation. At the end of the year, the President's Physical Fitness test is done with grades 1 - 8 and is part of the student's final grade.
I do my best to create an environment where the students can enjoy their gym class and have fun!
